Capturing near-Earth asteroids around Earth

چکیده
The list of detected near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) is constantly growing. NEAs are likely targets for resources to support space industrialization, as they may be the least expensive source of certain needed raw materials. The limited supply of precious metals and semiconducting elements on Earth may be supplemented or even replaced by the reserves floating in the form of asteroids around the solar system. Precious metals make up a significant fraction NEAs by mass, and even one metallic asteroid of 1 km size and fair enrichment in platinum-group metals would contain twice the tonnage of such metals already harvested on Earth. There are 1000 NEAs with a diameter of greater than 1 km. Capturing these asteroids around the Earth would expand the mining industry into an entirely new dimension. Having such resources within easy reach in Earth’s orbit could provide an off-world environmentally friendly remedy for impending terrestrial shortages, especially given the need for raw materials in developing nations. In this paper, we develop and implement a conceptually simple algorithm to determine trajectory characteristics necessary to move NEAs into capture orbits around the Earth. Altered trajectories of asteroids are calculated using an ephemeris model. Only asteroids of eccentricity less than 0.1 have been studied and the model is restricted to the ecliptic plane for simplicity. We constrain the time of retrieval to be 10 years or less, based on considerations of the time to return on investment. For the heliocentric phase, constant acceleration is assumed. The acceleration required for transporting these asteroids from their undisturbed orbits to the sphere of influence of the Earth is the primary output, along with the impulse or acceleration necessary to effect capture to a bound orbit once the Earth’s sphere of influence is reached. The initial guess for the constant acceleration is provided by a new estimation method, similar in spirit to Edelbaum’s. Based on the numerically calculated trajectories, 23 asteroids are recommended for future consideration for capture missions, provided necessary technological developments are made. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. UNCLASSIFIED PREPARING FOR PLANETARY DEFENSE: Detection and Interception of Asteroids on Collision Course with Earth Subject and Problem Statement
As the Earth revolves around the Sun, it orbits through planetary debris left from the formation of the solar system. Many of the debris objects are asteroids and comets in orbits bringing them close to the Earth and are referred to as Near-Earth-Objects (or NEOs). Of the total NEO population, some portion are in orbits actually intersecting or crossing the orbit of the Earth. The asteroids of ...
متن کاملAsteroid Capture Using a Binary Exchange Mechanism
A new method of capturing an asteroid in an orbit around the Earth is proposed, inspired by the theory that the irregular satellites of Jupiter and Neptune may have at one time been members of a binary asteroid. After a close approach with the planet, the binary asteroid was disrupted, and one member was captured into a permanent orbit. A parametric study was conducted by simulating binary-Eart...

Radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2000 DP107 show that it is composed of an approximately 800-meter-diameter primary and an approximately 300-meter-diameter secondary revolving around their common center of mass. The orbital period of 1.755 +/- 0.007 days and semimajor axis of 2620 +/- 160 meters constrain the total mass of the system to 4.6 +/- 0.5 x 10(11) kilograms and the bulk density of ...
متن کاملSpectral Properties of Near-Earth Asteroids: Evidence for Sources of Ordinary Chondrite Meteorites
Although ordinary chondrite (OC) meteorites dominate observed falls, the identification of near-Earth and main-belt asteroid sources has remained elusive. Telescopic measurements of 35 near-Earth asteroids ( approximately3 kilometers in diameter) revealed six that have visible wavelength spectra similar to laboratory spectra of OC meteorites. Near-Earth asteroids were found to have spectral pro...
متن کاملNear Earth Asteroids with measurable Yarkovsky effect
We report on the determination of the Yarkovsky effect among Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs). The related recoil force is modeled through an empirical transverse acceleration resulting in a secular semimajor axis drift. For a successful determination we use a precise dynamical model including perturber asteroids and planetary relativistic terms. We found a few tens of object with a significant dete...
